3 South Texas Students Honored With Azios Hispanic Scholarship

Three South Texas students have been selected to receive a new scholarship honoring one of our most illustrious alumni, the late Judge A. D. Azios. Adam Aldrete, Rose Molina, and Ivan Saenz are among five students from the Houston area to be honored with scholarships from the Azios Hispanic Scholarship Fund, Inc., which was established last spring.

Judge Azios was the first Hispanic to serve on the Harris County bench and had one of the longest judicial careers in Texas. Among his passions was helping economically deprived students pursue their dreams through education. The scholarship in his name will assist outstanding low-income students of Hispanic descent.

“Because Judge Azios was a proud South Texas alumnus,” said his daughter, Norma Johnson, “we were inspired to help students at the college who are following in his footsteps.”

Adam graduated from South Texas earlier this month and is now getting ready for the bar exam. "I am honored to receive this award. Judge Azios' life story is remarkable as it is filled with courage and integrity. These are values that we as a South Texas College of Law family work hard to bring to both the classroom and legal profession."

Both Rose and Ivan will continue their legal studies in the fall. Rose, who is set to graduate this December, said, “In the past ten years, one of the biggest challenges I have faced was completing my undergraduate education and going to law school while being a single mother. I am very honored to have been selected to receive the Azios scholarship.”
